Vance Summer Reading

Summer reading helps students to maintain and accelerate their reading skills.  This summer, all Vance students are required to complete a summer reading assignment.  Students will check out their summer reading book from the Vance Library during rising up on May 15 and 16.

Rising 8th grade students may choose from one of the following books:

  • Al Capone Does My Shirts by Gennier Choldenko
  • Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry
  • The Transall Saga by Gary Paulsen
  • Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick
  • A Day No Pigs Would Die by Robert Peck
  • Running Out of Time by Margaret Peterson Haddix

Rising 7th grade students may choose from one of the following books:

  • Dead End in Norvelt by Jack Gantos
  • The Giver by Lois Lowry
  • Pictures of Hollis Woods by Patricia Reilly Giff
  • Seraphina and the Black Cloak by Robert Beatty

Students may also pick up a required reading book at the Vance counseling office. The office is open Monday -Thursday throughout the summer. Please call ahead.
