Bio

Hi!! I'm Lisa Abel, and this is my tenth year here at Vance.  Well, at least it's my tenth year teaching here.  I attended Vance as a student years ago.  I also graduated from Tennessee High and then from ETSU, majoring in Environmental Health.  After being a stay-at-home mom for several years, I went back to Milligan College and earned my Master's degree in education.  Before coming to Vance, I taught eighth grade English and sixth grade science and social studies and coached track at Happy Valley Middle School.

My music of choice includes anything by Jimmy Buffett, The Dirty Guv'nahs, reggae, U2, alternative rock, and, when I'm in the right mood, Jethro Tull, Little Feat, or classical.  My favourite colour is green -- just look at my room!  My favourite places to be include any beach (especially Tybee Island), Savannah (GA), Ireland, and my deck overlooking my backyard.  I enjoy reading, watching baseball and hockey (live!!), watercolour painting, and photography.  I'm also back running again, albeit at a turtle's pace.

I adore traveling!!  I've been all over the western U.S.  In 1998, I spent time in England, Ireland, and Wales.  I toured France for a couple of weeks in 2006 with my daughter, having a fantastic time and taking nearly 2000 photos between us.  The Caribbean, Hawaii, and New Zealand are dream destinations.

In the summer of 2010, I was fortunate to have been chosen to participate in an EarthWatch expedition to Churchill, Manitoba, Canada, from a pool of over 400 applicants.  I was part of a team of 11 middle school teachers helping Dr. Peter Kershaw (University of Alberta) with his global climate change research.  It was truly the experience of a lifetime!!

And finally, I love sports!! Depending on whichever season it is, I'll be rooting for the Washington Redskins, UT Lady Vols basketball, UNC Lady Tarheels soccer, Nashville Predators, Savannah Sand Gnats, Tennessee Smokies, Boston Red Sox, and Chicago Cubs.  I'm a die-hard, long-suffering, sometimes obnoxious Cubs fan, so be warned!!  In 2008, I finally made it to the hallowed ground - Wrigley Field!!  I even caught a game in the bleacher seats!!  So now I am dying to see the Red Sox play at Fenway....One day....
